Citation of Ecological Archives
When referencing the contents of Ecological Archives for purposes of describing a finding or idea, reference should be made to the original journal article with which the appendix or supplement is associated. For example, to describe a scientific finding, you might cite the article “A. M. Ellison and B. L. Bedford. 1995. Response of a wetland vascular plant community to disturbance: a simulation study. Ecological Applications 5:109-123.”
When data from appendices and/or supplements published in Ecological Archives are used for further analysis and it is necessary to refer the reader to the exact data employed and any associated metadata, reference should be to the particular appendix or supplement containing the data. For the example of the article by Ellison and Bedford, to cite the supplemental file associated with that article you would cite Ellison and Bedford (1995: Supplement 1) in the text and include the reference listing for the Ecological Applications article in the Literature Cited (see above). Similarly, citation of Data Papers should be by author, year, title, journal name (e.g., Ecology, Ecological Applications) and page number, and within text be cited as "Author(s) (Year: Data Paper)".
The URL of Ecological Archives (currently http://www.esapubs.org/archive) will be published in each issue of the ESA journals and on ESA's website. Access to Ecological Archives is free and unlimited. Authors of papers that use information from Ecological Archives must cite the author(s) of that information and the relevant file or files in Ecological Archives.
Older appendices and supplements first published as ESA Supplemental Publication Service Documents also include the official ESPS number printed in the original article (e.g., Ecological Archives E063-001 = ESPS 8101).
