Reject without reviewDecision for MS #03-0001
Dear Dr. No,
Thank you for submission of your manuscript "Sources, sinks,
"
(03-0001) to [journal name]. We have had a look at the manuscript and decided
not to send it out for review. It is less general in concept, scope and approach
than our current objectives for manuscripts in this subject area.
The Journals of the Ecological Society of America share a goal of publishing
papers in general ecology that we judge will have the largest scientific influence.
The features of a submission that attract us are innovation, freshness, discovery,
and the intangibles that lead our editors to believe that a work is at the forefront
of science. We choose not to review many manuscripts that are ultimately published
in another journals. An expeditious rejection is valuable in affording you the
opportunity rethink and redirects your work quickly. Good luck with your ms

Dear Dr. No,
Thank you for the submission of your manuscript entitled "blah blah blah", but your manuscript exceeds the space limitations of the new look of our journals. If you wish to resubmit, please reduce your manuscript to 30 pages, inclusive of all: text, literature cited, tables, and figures. Supplementary materials beyond that can be submitted as appendices and could be published online in Ecological Archives. More information regarding Ecological Archives is posted on ESA's website at: http://esapubs.org/archive/default.htm
You
would need to resubmit as a new manuscript, indicating in the Comment field
that is a resubmission.

Dear Dr. No,
Thanks for your submission. We are in the midst of a revolution of concision
at Ecology and are requiring the submission of much
shorter manuscripts. Concise manuscripts are published faster and allow us to
publish more papers on a greater diversity of topics.
The ratio of information content to length of your manuscript is too low for the new look of our journals. We will consider a Report of no more than 20 double-spaced manuscript pages (including everything meant for "ink" from the title page to Literature Cited to figures). Please note that we make no guarantees of review or publication for a resubmission.
Any material beyond the target length above must be placed into linked digital appendices as Ecological Archives. To get a feel for the ways in which our authors use digital appendices, please see:
http://esapubs.org/archive/default.htm
Three of the easiest routes to shorter manuscripts are eliminating overlap between
the Introduction and Discussion, reducing number of citations, and relegating
tables and figures to digital appendices. The target number of combined tables
and figures for a Report is 3, for an Article in Ecology is 5, with a few more
in most Ecological Monographs. Ink tables and figures should be pertinent to
the text, relevant to your findings, and interesting. Ink tables and figures
are usually referred to multiple times in the text. Additional tables and figures
should be placed in digital appendices. Brief, condensed tables and figures
in ink in the text can be expanded to a larger size and number in the digital
appendices (eg. Appendix A of Ecological Archives E082-011). The most pertinent
data, means, error estimates, effect sizes, summary lists of important taxa,
and similar things are often placed into the ink tables and figures. Condensed
tables of results and complicated statistical designs that are carefully dealt
with in the text are appropriate for ink, with expanded versions in digital
appendices. However, many tables of no more than p values, sums of squares,
degrees of freedom and statistical tests should be placed in the digital appendices.
Concisely summarize the most important results of statistical tests in the text
and discuss their design in the Methods. Figures should highlight distinctive
patterns of results. Long series of similar figures should go in digital appendices;
summarize the process in a single figure in ink.
Material intended for Ecological Archives must be in a separate file or files.
It is extremely important to lay out clearly and accurately in the cover letter
the revised length of the ink part of the submission and your revised partitions
between ink and digital material. Clearly explain the changes from the original
submission in the cover letter. Two important points: First, it is the task
of authors to decide prior to submission what material is meant for digital
archives. Second, the editors are the ultimate judges of manuscript length and
journal assignment: Ecology, Ecological Monographs, or Ecological Applications.
Please do not appeal our decisions of length and/or journal assignment. Please indicate the previous manuscript number in the Comment field.
Best wishes,
Donald R. Strong

Decision for MS #03-0001
Dear Dr. Yes,
Thanks for your submission to Ecological Monographs. Effective January 1, 2009, the overall scope and mission of Ecological Monographs changed. In brief, papers to be published in Ecological Monographs must provide integrative and complete documentation of major empirical and theoretical advances in the field and establish benchmarks from which future research will build. Justification for their length must be based on characteristics of the research, analysis, and presentation of results and not simply because they involve large data sets or long-duration studies. Please see: http://esapubs.org/esapubs/journals/monographs.htm for additional details.
In the case of your manuscript, the ratio of information content to length and the scope of your manuscript would be more suited to one of our sister journals, Ecology, Ecological Applications, or Ecosphere. Please visit http://esapubs.org/ where we have posted the most recent Instructions to Authors for each of these journals. Note in particular journal scope, length limits, policies on use of digital appendices and supplements, and open-access policies. Note in particular that Ecosphere is an on-line only, open-access journal. Additional information about, and comparisons among, all of the ESA journals was published in the January 2011 issue of the ESA Bulletin (http://www.esajournals.org/doi/full/10.1890/0012-9623-92.1.3).
If you choose to revise and resubmit this work to one of the other ESA journals, you must resubmit your paper as a new manuscript in EcoTrack. You should lay out clearly and accurately in your cover letter the changes from the original submission, noting especially the revised length of the part of the manuscript intended for print and, if appropriate, the part intended for publication as on-line-only appendices or supplements. Finally, the editors are the ultimate judges of manuscript length and journal assignment. Please do not appeal our decisions of length and/or journal assignment.
Finally, please be aware that submissions to all ESA journals are increasing at a rapid rate and that the editors are rejecting more and more excellent manuscripts without sending them out for review. There is no guarantee that a shortened version of this manuscript submitted to another ESA journal will be sent out for review.
Best wishes,

Dear Dr. Yes,
Thank you for the submission of your manuscript entitled "Tables and graphs " to Ecological Applications. We have had a look at the manuscript and decided not to send it out for review. It is less general in concept, scope and approach than our current objectives for manuscripts in this subject area.
We receive a large number of papers proposing new indices and indicators. Our policy is to consider such papers only when they show the index or indicator in use to address a research or management problem. In general we do not publish papers proposing, evaluating or comparing such measures.

Reject without review - oversubscribed subject area- Strong
Decision for MS #03-0001
Dear Dr. Yes,
Thanks for your submission to Ecology. We have decided not to send your submission out for review, consistent with our new policies at Ecology and Ecological Monographs of choosing only a subset for review of the many simultaneous submissions in the most prolific subject matter areas. We face the challenge of remaining a journal of general ecology, representing the broad sweep of our discipline. The boundaries of ecology are expanding, and we are endeavoring to include the range of new subjects. We receive a huge number of submissions, substantially more than we are able to review on the modest resources of a society journal. The up side to our new policies is that authors can quickly learn of the need to recast their work for another of the several other journals appropriate for their work. I wish you the best of luck with your manuscript at another journal.

Reject without review - oversubscribed - Ecosphere
Decision for MS #03-0001
Dear Dr. Yes,
Thank you for your submission ("Spatial repetitions in time ") to {Journal Name}. We have decided not to send your submission out for review, consistent with our policy of choosing only a subset for review of the many simultaneous submissions in the most prolific subject matter areas. However, we find this work highly appropriate for the new ESA journal, Ecosphere.
Online only and completely open access, Ecosphere follows a new model in scientific publishing that goes beyond the limitations of paper journals. Ecosphere will allow the ESA to accommodate the increasing rate of submissions of first-rate ecological science. The Editor-in-Chief of Ecosphere is Debra Peters.
Please note some important differences between Ecosphere and the other ESA journals. First, we expect rapid publication of manuscripts that are accepted. Second, papers published in Ecosphere do not have the page length limitations of papers published in the print journals. Therefore, material you may have slated for appendices may be integrated into the main manuscript or may appear as appendices posted along with the main article. Third, there is an open-access fee charged to the author of $1250.00 for ESA members and $1500.00 for non-members per paper published in Ecosphere. You can find out more about Ecosphere at [http://esapubs.org/esapubs/journals/ecosphere.htm].
If you wish to have your manuscript submitted to Ecosphere for consideration, you have two options. If you would like the current submission to be transferred "as is," please respond to [[email protected]] within two weeks and we can transfer it. If you would like to do any reformatting before the paper is considered at Ecosphere, please make the changes and submit your new version directly to Ecosphere’s EcoTrack [http://ecosphere.esapubs.org] when it is ready. Please indicate the previous journal and manuscript number (Journal Name MS# ) in the Comment field for tracking purposes. There is no guarantee that a paper transferred to Ecosphere will be sent out for review. It will be considered a new submission and evaluated by the Editor-in-Chief of Ecosphere.

Reject without review - too long Ecology/ OK to Ecosphere
Decision for MS #03-0001
Dear Dr. Yes,
Thank you for your submission. Although we cannot consider your current manuscript for Ecology, we offer you two options. The ground has shifted at Ecology. While Ecology has been evolving to shorter, concise manuscripts, Ecosphere has joined our family of journals, providing an outlet for longer manuscripts, rapid publication and open access. If you wish to pursue the possibility of publication in an ESA journal, you could either shorten your manuscript and resubmit to Ecology, or you may submit your manuscript to Ecosphere.
Concise manuscripts can be published faster in Ecology and allow us to publish more papers on a greater diversity of topics. The ratio of information content to length of your manuscript is too low for Ecology. We will consider a Report/Article of no more than 20/30 double-spaced manuscript pages (including everything meant for "ink" from the title page to Literature Cited to figures). Please note that we make no guarantees of review or publication for a resubmission.
Any material beyond the target length given above must be placed into linked digital appendices as Ecological Archives. Material intended for Ecological Archives must be in a separate file. For ideas on making your manuscript concise please see [http://esapubs.org/esapubs/concision.htm]. To get a feel for the ways in which our authors use digital appendices, please see [http://esapubs.org/archive/default.htm].
It is extremely important to lay out clearly and accurately in the cover letter the revised length of the ink part of the submission and your revised partitions between ink and digital material. Clearly explain the changes from the original submission in the cover letter. Two important points: First, it is the task of authors to decide prior to submission what material is meant for digital archives. Second, the editors are the ultimate judges of manuscript length and journal assignment: Ecology, Ecological Monographs, Ecological Applications, or Ecosphere. Please do not appeal our decisions of length and/or journal assignment.
If you wish to resubmit to Ecology, submit it on EcoTrack (http://esapubs.esapubs.org) as for a new manuscript, indicating the previous manuscript number in the comment field. For current submission instructions, please consult [http://esapubs.org/esapubs/authors.htm].
Alternatively, we offer you the choice of submitting your manuscript to Ecosphere. Online only and completely open access, Ecosphere follows a new model in scientific publishing that goes beyond the limitations of paper journals. Papers published in Ecosphere do not have the page length limitations of papers published in the print journals. Therefore, material you may have slated for appendices may be integrated into the main manuscript or may appear as appendices posted along with the main article. Ecosphere will allow the ESA to accommodate the increasing rate of submissions of first-rate ecological science. Papers accepted for publication in Ecosphere can be published rapidly. The Editor-in-chief of Ecosphere is Debra Peters.
There is an open-access fee charged to the author of $1250.00 for ESA members and $1500.00 for non-members per paper published in Ecosphere. You can find out more about Ecosphere at (http://esapubs.org/esapubs/journals/ecosphere.htm).
If you wish to have your manuscript submitted to Ecosphere for consideration, contact [[email protected]] within two weeks and we can transfer it as is. If you would like to do any reformatting before the paper is considered at Ecosphere (such as incorporating appendix material into the body of the manuscript), please make the changes and submit your new version directly to Ecosphere’s EcoTrack (http://ecosphere.esapubs.org) when it is ready. Please indicate the previous journal and manuscript number ({$ms_category} MS# {$ms_no}) in the Comment field for tracking purposes. There is no guarantee that a paper transferred to Ecosphere will be sent out for review. It will be considered a new submission and evaluated by the Editor-in-Chief of Ecosphere.

Dear Dr. No,
Thank you for your submission to Ecology. Unfortunately your current submission does not adhere to a new requirement we instituted, i.e. the requirement to disclose the software used and to include the computer code for any novel models, simulations or statistical analyses. See the submission requirements at http://esapubs.org/esapubs/AuthorInstructions.htm#rs.
[editor's comments]
You have two weeks from the date of this letter to revise your current submission to fulfill the requirement. The software can be identified in the Methods section and any novel computer code should be included as a Supplement for Ecological Archives. Your current submission will be saved in EcoTrack during that period, so that you can add or replace files as for a revision without re-doing everything. After two weeks your submission will be considered rejected, but you could resubmit as for a new manuscript.

Decision for MS #03-0001:
[MS type, e.g. Report, Communication, Article...]
Dear Dr. No,
I am pleased to accept your manuscript "Population boom or bust..." [ms type]
for publication in [journal name].Any minor changes that need to be made prior to submitting your final version are outlined below.
[editor comments]
Please follow closely the instructions on the Checklist for Authors (see below) to avoid delays in the processing and publication of your manuscript. Log into EcoTrack (http://esapubs.esapubs.org) to upload the final version of your manuscript [and Ecological Archives material]. Beginning June 13, 2012, Ecological Archives material is no longer submitted separately following acceptance, but must instead be provided in EcoTrack with your final manuscript.
Please submit your final files within the next two weeks. Accepted manuscripts are published in the order in which the final versions are received so it is to your advantage to provide the final material as soon as possible.
Please be aware that the acceptance of your manuscript is contingent on your compliance with ESA's press embargo policy. Please see: http://esapubs.org/esapubs/embargo.htm
After your final version [and Ecological Archives files] have been received and approved, an acknowledgment letter will be sent giving you the option to post your final version as a preprint. If you are at all interested in the possibility of a preprint for your manuscript please take extra care submitting your final version, as no changes to the preprint will be allowed. Be aware that the abstract and the order of authors for the preprint will be copied from the EcoTrack metadata, not from the manuscript itself. Although the author affiliations for the preprint abstract listing will come from each author's profile on EcoTrack, it is imperative that each author's current address is listed in their profile. For more information about preprints please see: http://esapubs.org/esapubs/preprintFAQs.htm
Authors are encouraged to register their data at ESA's official Data Registry at <data.esa.org>.
Data registry simply serves to announce the existence of data and to provide contact information. By registering data, one does not relinquish rights to research findings. In fact, the registry may serve to establish precedence for ecological studies. Our hope is that the Data Registry will eventually be linked to Data Archives containing the actual data referred to in the registry, and that all data underlying published papers in ESA journals will be readily available for purposes of verification, replication, and meta-analysis.
Further correspondence regarding the publication of your manuscript can be addressed to the staff of the Publications Office at: [email protected]
IMPORTANT: While you should continue to update your profile in EcoTrack, updates to the online system alone will not suffice for accepted manuscripts. Please inform the staff of the Publications Office of any change in your contact information by sending an email to the above address.
Again, congratulations on this good work and many thanks for submitting this manuscript to the journal!
Very sincerely,
