Appendix C. SR, LR, and RLR calculated from empirical data.

Table C1. Self-recruitment (SR), local retention (LR), relative local retention (RLR), number of adults, and number of recruits, assessed for eight sites and three years using Saenz-Agudelo et al.’s (2011, 2012) data. Note that due to larval mortality, LR, which measures the raw fraction of eggs recruiting back to the site of production, is generally much smaller than SR or RLR, which measure fractions of recruits instead of eggs. This is not the case here because we used the number of adults instead of the (unknown) number of eggs produced to calculate LR, assuming that the number of eggs produced per adult is the same at the different sites. Also note that for all sites and years, values of RLR are higher than values of SR. As explained in the main text, this is supposedly because not all sites were sampled in the metapopulation, resulting in overestimating RLR.
