Appendix A. Formula for the calculation of stratification (Brunt-Väisälä frequency).
Water column stratification was computed as the square of the Brunt-Väisälä frequency
where g is gravity (9.8 m s-2), is mean water column density, and is the change in density with depth. Density was calculated according to the UNESCO polynomial (Fofonoff and Millard 1983), based on 18-h low-pass filtered temperatures, a salinity of 35 psu, and pressure calculated from latitude and depth.
