Plots of the relationships between herbivory (from each of the three herbivore guilds) and plant nutritional, defense and patch-related variables. Each dependent variable is represented by the residuals from a repeated-measures mixed-effects ANOVA in which all factors from the best-fit model (see Table 1), except the covariate (x-axis), were included in the model. R² is computed from a least-squares regression involving the covariate and residuals and the P value is derived from the best-fit model (including the covariate).
