TABLE 4. Missing and underrepresented groups and severely aggregated nodes.

Missing groups Underrepresented groups Aggregated nodes
Group Notes Group Notes Group Notes
Plant Ectoparasites These include herbivorous insects that would be deemed parasitic by our consumer strategy definitions. Parasitic Protists Though some single-celled parasitic organisms are in the web, most were not included. For example, fish blood was not examined for hemoflagellates. Phytoplankton This node comprises the autotrophic component of the plankton community (Examples: diatoms, dinoflagellates and cyanobacteria).
Plant Endoparasites Plant endoparasites such as leaf miners, nematodes, and fungus were not sampled. Myxozoans While one myxozoan is present in the web, myxozoans were undersampled. Roots This node is an aggregate of the belowground biomass of all terrestrial plant material. Though not included in any link file, because it has no trophic links, this node does have a biomass and is included in the nodes data.
Bird Ectoparasites Bird ectoparasites such as lice and mites are undoubtedly present but were not sampled. Viruses Viruses and phages on all nodes were severely undersampled. Epipellic Flora This node, likely the most speciose aggregated assemblage, comprises the microphytobenthos, which includes diatoms and cyanobacteria.
Free-living Protists Free-living ciliates and flagellates are not included in the web. Ectoparasites of Fishes Fish ectoparasites and micropredators were undersampled. Free-living copepods The 3 free-living copepod nodes are poorly resolved and likely represent several free-living species.
Meiofauna This group includes taxa such as free-living nematodes, gnathostimulids and kinorhynchs. Flying insects Flying insect stages, such as adult lepidopterans and dipterans were not sampled by our techniques.
Fungi Free-living and symbiotic fungi were not included in this web.
Bacteria Free-living and symbiotic bacteria were not included in this web.
