Appendix D. Initial conditions.

Simulations of the experiments require initial conditions. The initial conditions that we used for the population densities (Ni) of the species are indicated in Table D1 below. The initial conditions for the intracellular phosphorus contents (Qi) of the species equaled their steady-state intracellular phosphorus contents, which are provided in Table 2 of the main paper. The initial conditions for the external phosphorus concentrations (R) were calculated from the mass balance of phosphorus, as the difference between the phosphorus concentration in the inflow (Rin) and the initial amount of phosphorus stored in the phytoplankton species:
