In each table, the first column refers to the step in which the model was introduced (see Methods), the next four columns refer to model structure, and the last three columns report the relative performance and complexity of the models. Within the tables, "constant" means that only an intercept was estimated for that model component, "HII" indicates that the human influence index was included as a covariate, "AL" indicates that an autologistic covariate was included, "stop" means that detection was allowed to vary among the five stops at each site (detection probability was thought to be influenced by time of day), and year means that detection was allowed to vary between each year.
