Appendix F. Taxonomic distribution of orders of Ascomycota among representative strains of endophytic fungi recovered from woody angiosperms in lowland, moist tropical forest at Barro Colorado Island, Panama (BCI).
Identifications are based on ITSrDNA sequence similarity for endophytes identified in two recent phylogenetic analyses (Arnold et al. 2007, Higgins et al. 2007). 'Order incertae sedis' includes the large number of endophytes with phylogenetic affinity for Botryosphaeriaceae (Dothideomycetes incertae sedis). Endophytes of uncertain placement did not show significant affinity for identified taxa. The most common genera included members of the Sordariomycetes (Colletotrichum/Glomerella, Phyllachorales; Xylaria and Pestalotiopsis, Xylariales; Diaporthe/Phomopsis, Diaporthales; and Fusarium/Nectria, Hypocreales) and the Dothideomycetes (Botryosphaeria, Guignardia/Phyllosticta, and relatives; order incertae sedis).
