Counts were made on 2 × 2 × 30 m transects that were randomly allocated and located 1m below the kelp canopy. Group size was defined as the number of fish within a 2 × 2 × 2 m volume, with the leading edge of the cube defined by the first fish encountered along the transect. Data presented are for 12 separate kelp beds near Carmel Bay, California that were surveyed in 2003. Each site was surveyed with 8 transects. |
