Notes: The criteria for inclusion were that the study (1) was published between 1980 and 2003 (with the exception of two unpublished data sets), (2) performed supplemental-pollination experiments in natural populations, (3) reported response as the total number of seeds produced per plant, and (4) reported mean, sample size, and an error estimate. For studies that considered other experimental treatments, only the control plants were included. Studies were identified using Web of Science and Biological Abstracts using key words: pollen limit*, hand poll* and supp* poll*. The table lists species and family, an "identifier" (additional descriptors identifying the source of the data such as the location, population, year or plant morph), sample size, average number of seeds per plant, and one standard deviation for plants in the control and supplemental-pollination treatments, the effect size (e') and the variance in e' (see Fig. 2 legend for formulas; rounding to two significant digits results in error similarity within some studies) used in the meta-analysis and presented in Fig. 2. Full citations for the studies follow the table.
