Table G1. Results of bootstrap t-test analyses performed to compare the per capita (a–c) effect of the focal herbivore species between phase 1 (colonization) and phase 2 (establishments) of early succession in the field experiments. P values, the t statistic and 95% confidence intervals for each comparison are presented. Significant values using uncorrected probabilities (α < 0.05) in bold. A simple Dunn-Sidák correction for the four tests on each species, produce a corrected significance level of α < 0.0127 which doesn't alter conclusions.

Statistical Method
In order to test for differences between phases (colonization vs. establishment (Table G1), and between results of field and laboratory experiments (Tables G2–G3), a bootstrap t test procedure was conducted (Manly 1997). The procedure consists in generating bootstrap samples from adjusted data by removing group means (no between group differences). Then 1000 bootstrap samples are obtained by re-sampling with replacement, separately from each original group. A bootstrap t statistic was computed independently for each herbivore species. In this case, the suitable t test is: x_{1} - x_{2} / v(S^{2}_{1} / n_{1} + S^{2}_{1} / n_{2}) where S^{2} = Σ(x_{ij} - X)^{2} / (n_{j} - 1), and X is the mean value for group x_{1} and x_{2}.
